Our program continues to expand in new&nbsp;ways. We welcomed new faculty this year:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dr. Kelsey Johnson who is EVMS alumni with fellowship training in geriatric psychiatry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Abbey McLean who is EVMS alumni with a focus on consult-liaison psychiatry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were also&nbsp;able to secure permanent funding for 6 residents per class (historically class sizes have ranged from 4-6). Additionally, we are welcoming Dr. Kelsey Johnson to the role of assistant program director.&nbsp;In Summer&nbsp;2023, we will launch our first psychiatry&nbsp;fellowship at EVMS in child and adolescent psychiatry with program director Dr. Mary Gleason. This will be housed in the Children&#8217;s Pavilion of CHKD which opened in 2022 and is a state-of-the-art freestanding pediatric&nbsp;mental health hospital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are saying goodbye to our PGY4 residents:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dr. Dylan Golomb &#8211; accepted to Thomas Jefferson University Addiction Psychiatry fellowship&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Max Simonsen &#8211; accepted a position at Kaiser Permanente in Burke, VA in outpatient psychiatry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our residents have been staying busy with conferences and scholarly activity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dr. Seth Warren (PGY-3) spoke at the 2022 Eastern Region HIV\/AIDS fall summit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Vivian Tran (PGY-2) received a travel award to present at the AAP Conference in&nbsp;October&nbsp;2022<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Lorrie Sinibaldi&#8217;s (PGY-1) poster was accepted at the American Neuropsychiatric Associations national 33rd annual meeting&nbsp;<em>Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and Psychosis: A Case of New-Onset Psychosis Following Carbon Monoxide Exposure in a 59-Year-Old Woman with no Previous Psychiatric History<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Shefali Hegde (PGY-3) won 2nd place for her poster at the 2022&nbsp;PSV fall meeting &#8211; <em>Zolpidem &#8220;Awakening&#8221; in a Case of Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drs. Emily Carbaugh (PGY-3), Vivian Tran, and Shefali Hegde were&nbsp;involved in a paper accepted for publication in the Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders &#8211; <em>A Case of Ovarian Teratoma-Induced N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Antibody Encephalitis Presenting with Psychosis and Catatonia, Progressing to the Minimally Conscious State and Successfully Treated with&nbsp;Adjunctive Zolpidem<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our attendings are staying busy:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dr. Jessica&nbsp;Mees-Campbell elected to position of&nbsp;Secretary of the Board of Directors for the PSV<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Greg Briscoe and Dr. Lisa Fore-Arcand continue their exemplary involvement in ADMSEP Executive Council, an organization that continues to develop medical student interest and recruitment into psychiatry at the national level&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Shriti Patel co-presented two workshops at the&nbsp;2023 AADRPT National Meeting: &#8220;A Lapse in Memory: A guide in teaching about major neurocognitive disorders for the perplexed&#8221; and &#8220;Holistic Review 2.0: Evaluation and Improving Your Holistic Review Framework via Enrollment Management&#8221;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Jerome&nbsp;Blackman published his most recent book &#8220;Developmental Evaluation of Children and Adolescents: A Psychodynamic Guide&#8221;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Abbey McLean&#8217;s poster <em>A Case of Catatonia Secondary to COVID-19 in an Unlikely Candidate<\/em> was accepted for presentation at the national Consult-Liaison Psychiatry conference.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Spiegel recently published in&nbsp;the Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders: &#8220;A&nbsp;Case of Ovarian Teratoma-Induced N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Antibody Encephalitis Presenting with Psychosis and Catatonia, Progressing to the Minimally Conscious State and Successfully Treated with&nbsp;Adjunctive Zolpidem&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And being&nbsp;recognized for their work:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dr. Greg Briscoe nationally awarded with the APA Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. David Spiegel nationally awarded with the APA Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Mary Margaret Gleason recognized with&nbsp;the Kay W. Abiouness Distinguished Professorship award&nbsp;in Pediatric and Adolescent Psychiatry&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Shriti Patel honored with the Presidential EVMS Champion of Diversity and Inclusion Award and recognized for receiving the Redwood Distinguished Professorship of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Armin Ansari awarded with the APA Nancy C.A. Roeske Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Medical Student Education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EVMS continues to make a difference in the community!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dr. Patricia King (EVMS alumni) was recognized in February for her impact in the community through&nbsp;starting a nonprofit (Hearts 4 Progress) and raising&nbsp;scholarship funds for minority students at EVMS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EVMS Psychiatry&#8217;s&nbsp;Program Coordinator, Melody Johnson, played a pivotal role in creating 100+ care packages for the homeless community in Norfolk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Emily Carbaugh, DOResident PhysicianEastern Virginia Medical SchoolDepartment of Psychiatry &amp; Behavioral MedicineNorfolk, VA We have some exciting updates for the EVMS psychiatry residency!
