{"id":3625,"date":"2026-06-05T14:02:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T14:02:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.psva.org\/?p=3625"},"modified":"2026-06-09T19:48:49","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T19:48:49","slug":"2026-federation-of-state-medical-boards-annual-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.psva.org\/?p=3625","title":{"rendered":"2026 Federation of State Medical Boards Annual Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Bill Harp, MD, DLFAPA<\/strong><br><em>Virginia Board of Medicine<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bill Harp and three members of the Virginia Board of Medicine attended the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Federation of State Medical Boards in Baltimore, April 29-May 2.\u00a0There were presentations on many regulatory topics; two bear mention to PSV membership.\u00a0The first is Artificial Intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Present were the Director of the Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy for the state of Utah and the co-CEO of Doctronic.\u00a0 Doctronic has logged over 25 million telehealth visits.\u00a0 Its model is to have AI do the workup of the patient and then hand the visit off to the physician for a prescription if necessary.\u00a0 Some Doctronic physicians refer to AI as \u201cthe best chief resident ever.\u201d\u00a0 The current model ensures that a physician is involved for the issuance of a prescription.\u00a0The state of Utah and Doctronic have entered into a pilot that will not involve a physician.\u00a0 AI will handle the visit from start to finish including the issuance of a prescription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second topic is psychedelic drugs.\u00a0 A great presentation from an Emory University psychiatrist covered some of the challenges boards of medicine will face with emerging therapies including cannabis, ketamine, psilocybin, and LSD.\u00a0 The medical literature is usually the arbiter of standard of care for the use of medications, but it can take time for best practices with new therapies to evolve.
