Dr. William Harp

Dr. Harp will be speaking at the Annual Meeting of MSV in Norfolk on October 24, 2025.  The lecture will be Reflections on the Board of Medicine.

Dr. Rebecca Barchas

Dr. Barchas is having a great 2025!  50 years of APA Membership was marked by participation in the procession march with others at the Los Angeles APA in May.  In June, she learned the wonderful news that her paper, “Electroconvulsive Therapy Highlights the Urgency of Addressing Medical Stigma,” was being published by Elsevier in The Lancet Regional Health-Americas, July, 2025; 47: 101154, DOI: 10.1016/j.lana.2025.101154

Dr. Barchas wrote the paper to very directly challenge the stigma associated with ECT because despite ECT’s efficacy and safety, it is largely the effect of stigma that accounts for ECT’s underutilization.  Dr. Barchas is delighted that her paper was published by a journal in the Lancet family, as it brings worldwide attention to this very important issue of stigma.

Dr. Ryan White Running for Roanoke County School Board

Dear Colleagues,

I’m excited to share that I am officially running for the Roanoke County School Board. As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, I’ve spent my career working alongside families, educators, and youth—advocating for mental health, trauma-informed practices, and inclusive, evidence-based care in school and community settings.

Now, I’m bringing that same dedication to public service by stepping forward to help shape the future of education in our community. Our role as physicians and psychiatrists makes us uniquely qualified to advocate for our youth and families.  My campaign is centered around returning students to the heart of school board decision-making, rebuilding a culture of respect and transparency, and ensuring our schools are safe, supportive, and academically strong for every learner.

I welcome your support, your insights, and your voice as I take this next step in advocacy and leadership. You can learn more about the campaign at www.ryanwhite4sb.com. This is an elected position on the general election ballot on November 4th, 2025.

Thank you for being part of the professional community that continues to shape how I serve.

Mariel Herbert, MD, with Herbert Psychiatry, LLC, is pleased to announce three new weekly process groups for practicing physicians (MD/DO), dentists (DDS/DMD), and veterinarians (DVM/VMD) respectively.

For ease of access and privacy, these groups meet via telehealth and are currently open to Virginia and Maryland residents.

Each group will be limited to 5-10 participants at any time. Group readiness and process are discussed during a 60-minute individual intake appointment.

Those interested may visit herbertpsychiatry.com to learn more and may contact me directly. I am looking forward to some compassionate and cohesive groups. -Mariel

Ongoing peer group for women psychiatrists in private practice: If you are a woman-identifying psychiatrist in private practice in Virginia/DMV, and you would like to join our friendly monthly peer supervision and support group, please email me at [email protected]. We currently meet virtually. This is not a psychotherapy service and is free.
