“I had a dream of what I wanted my life to be at its core. From the age of 6 years old, I knew I wanted to become a psychiatrist. And once I became a Psychiatrist and started practicing, when I was then in my early 30’s back in the early 1980’s, I created a new goal for myself—the goal of ultimately creating an Endowed Chair, a research Professorship in the Department of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland.
This is where I graduated from Medical School and had remained at University Hospitals of Cleveland for my Psychiatry Residency training. I have been able to fulfill my goals during my lifetime because of my perseverance and determination, a sense of purpose, grit, and a strong sense of connection. I am so happy that the inaugural Chair holder selected for the Rebecca E. Barchas, MD, Professorship in Translational Psychiatry, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, is Andrew A. Pieper, MD, PhD, as he perfectly combines all the qualities of an outstanding researcher with the decency, humanity, and caring of a wonderful human being.”
The celebration for the Endowed Chair, that Dr. Barchas established at Case Western Reserve University, occurred the first week of July and the media announcement came out July 12.
