I am writing to share some information with you about my colleague, Ihuoma Njoku, who is currently a psychiatry resident at UVA. As you likely know, September is Women In Medicine month, and Dr. Njoku is part of a group called Women In Academia Valuing Equity (WAVE). As part of WAVE’s efforts to support women in medicine and science, we are participating in a national campaign called the “Give Her A Reason To Stay In Healthcare” campaign. Part of this campaign involves amplifying the terrific work of women in medicine and science, which is why I am writing to you about my colleague.
Since Dr. Njoku is a psychiatry resident, I wanted to reach out and share an update with you about her accomplishments. Ihuoma Njoku’s most recent accomplishments include the Leonard Tow Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award, serving as a Leadership Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, multiple local as well as national research awards, and multiple publications with topics including the neuroscience, COVID-19 pandemic, and the physician workforce. In addition, Dr. Njoku serves the community of Charlottesville by volunteering with the Charlottesville Free Clinic to those who have limited access to psychiatry.
Below are links for two recent articles in Forbes and Becker’s Hospital Review that discuss the campaign.
Thank you for considering my request to amplify the wonderful work of my colleague, Dr. Njoku, in the Psychiatric Society of Virginia Newsletter. She can be reached at IN7FK@ virginia.edu or (434)-305-9345.
