Eastern Virginia Medical School Update

By Dylan Golomb, MD
Eastern Virginia Medical School

Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is excited to announce our six entering PGY-1 physicians from this year’s NRMP MATCH:

  • Rizwan Hassan, DO from Liberty U COM
  • Janelle Marie Milstead, DO from Lake Erie COM
  • Lorrie Sinibaldi, DO from Lake Erie COM
  • Evan Philip Smith, DO from Lake Erie COM
  • Sequoia Sheely, MD from EVMS
  • Chelsey Lynn Rountree, MD from American University of the Caribbean SOM (AUC)

We are confident this diverse class will help strengthen our program’s training experience, which includes dedication to diversity in both trainees and clinical exposure.

Our program has had the opportunity to praise the accomplishments of two retiring physicians this year. Dr. Maria Urbano retired after decades with our department, though she will continue to graciously offer her unique expertise in psychodynamic psychotherapy supervision. Dr. Stephen Deutsch retired in March 2022 from his position as program chair after a 13-year tenure with our department, during which he facilitated many improvements in our program. We also wish the best to Dr. Justin Petri who in December 2021 transitioned from his inpatient Sentara Norfolk General Hospital role to caring for veterans in the local area in an outpatient setting.

Our department has also welcomed several new staff psychiatry physicians who are eager to work in an academic setting with residents. Dr. Nana Cudjoe, MD, MPH, practicing general psychiatry, joined us in 2021 shortly after completing residency with a dedication to academic involvement with residents. Dr. Abigail Mansfield, MD with specialization in addiction psychiatry, joined us in 2022. A graduate of EVMS for both medical school and residency, she has returned after multiple years of experience with the Virginia Beach Community Services Board and in private practice, also with dedication to academics. Dr. Mark Cotterell, MD, with a specialization in forensic psychiatry, joined us in 2021, offering a wealth of information in forensics psychiatry previously left unfilled. Dr. James Rapley, MD, practicing general psychiatry, joined us in 2020, bringing valuable and unique perspectives on active military and veteran populations and offering rare expertise in group psychotherapy.

Also worth mentioning is our accomplished recent graduates. From the class of 2021 we have: Kelsey Johnson, MD, who matched into a geriatric psychiatry fellowship, and will be joining us in August of this year as faculty. Alexander Pattison, MD, who currently works with veterans at the Hampton VAMC and this year is joining us as community faculty providing both clinical and therapy supervision. Dr. Chantel Harsch, DO now works at Inova in northern VA in the inpatient setting. From the class of 2020 we have: Dr. Kassimier Thompson, who worked with the VA system and now has a private practice. Dr. Ryan Wade completed an addiction psychiatry fellowship at Yale and now works in private consultative practice. Dr. Michael Naughton works in private practice in Oregon. Our recent graduates’ early careers and our new staff appointments show the opportunities both outside and inside academia for which our program strongly prepares trainees.
