Book Release: PSV, Lost Graces, and Politics
By Helen Montague Foster, MD, DLFAPA, retired
Dear PSV colleagues,
While I have the chance, I would like to convey my thanks to you, and to PSV, for your work and for the chance I’ve had to collaborate with you in the face of the massive changes to our profession during our careers. It has often seemed as if one challenge after another confronted us: from the rise in homelessness and incarceration that accompanied deinstitutionalization; to managed care; to availability of substances and guns; to the rise of the Internet with its effect on confidentiality, information, and misinformation; and to the decline of physician-owned practices.
I’ve just been informed that my novel, Lost Graces (released in November 2024) touching on our struggles to provide care in the face of insurance restrictions, has been chosen as one of five finalists for the Atmosphere Press Book of the Year Award. As I write this, in the aftermath of the November election, I am comforted by our relationships and way people in our profession band together to overcome the obstacles to providing care.
