After two thorough workgroup sessions this past summer, the Virginia Department of Health Professions released a report on the findings and discussions of the task force comprised of clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and other physicians. You can find PSV’s official statement on that report below.
The Virginia Academy of Clinical Psychologists has recently made clear that they do not intend to introduce legislation in 2026 that would expand prescriptive authority to licensed clinical psychologists. However, Senator Barbara Favola (D-Arlington), has expressed interest in continuing the discussions of the workgroup and will work during the 2026 Legislative Session to include an amendment to the Commonwealth’s budget that would fund its continuation in the Summer of 2026. The Psychiatric Society of Virginia, along with our allied physician societies, have made clear that we are always eager and ready to participate in discussions on access to mental health care but remain firm in our opposition to the expansion of prescriptive authority as a practical solution to this problem.
