Our residents continue to be involved in community outreach and support including staffing the Health Outreach Partnership of EVMS Students (HOPES) free mental health clinic. Established by medical students at EVMS in 2011, HOPES clinic supports the underserved Hampton Road community by providing primary and specialty medical care. Additionally, the residents and medical students are collecting donations of clothing and toiletries through December to prepare backpacks to be given to our patients most in need at discharge from inpatient treatment.
VHS-EVMS at ODU and The Virginia Psychoanalytic Society had the pleasure of hosting Joseph Fernando, MD for his lecture on “Psychoanalytic View of Trauma” as part of the 7th Annual Jerome S Blackman MD Lectureship in Psychoanalysis.
We were also excited to hear that the Virginian-Pilot also highlighted the ECT services offered by our faculty through SNGH with their article titled: “With a 3-month waitlist in Norfolk, electroconvulsive therapy is overcoming its reputation”. Articles like this will help to destigmatize ECT which continues to help our community.
Additionally, our residents and faculty have been involved in several academic endeavors in the past several months.
- At the Association for Academic Psychiatry Annual Meeting, Our Program Director, Dr. Shriti Patel facilitated a workshop titled “Ageist Microaggressions: Tools to Identify and Address Ageist Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviors in Training and Supervision.”
